A question that has probably already been discussed on tumblr

Can I ask a question about these ‘hipstamatic’ images? Dumb app name aside, I don’t understand why photographers and artists I respect embrace the “fake film” look of these photos. To me, it seems like if you want a film effect, shoot with film (I know that’s more expensive, but why take shortcuts when you’re making art?) I’m not saying the images don’t look good, but there is something unsettling about them.I feel like the effects and filters used to make an image look like it was taken on film stock are supposed to stimulate some sort of nostalgic reaction in us, but is cheaply replicating “vintage” photography okay with everyone else? I can’t quite put into words why it bugs me so much, but boy, does it ever. Again, they look good, and no offense to anyone who uses this filter/ app, but can someone explain to me how this is any different than going into a store and paying $70 for a fake vintage “Al’s Snack Shop” t-shirt? I’m curious to hear what everyone else thinks…?
